All our parent services are informed by the Hand in Hand Parenting approach.
A transformational, evidence-based approach that has nurtured the emotional wellbeing of children and the adults who care for them for over 30 years.
Based on five easy to understand tools, we offer group classes which can have a profound impact on the lives of parents and their families.
Hymhus Parent Support Group
During school term time on Wednesdays we run a creative parent support group.
We also have occasional evening and online sessions for peer support so please get in touch and register interest.

Sorry no, these sessions are for parents only so you can get a chance to focus on yourself - you deserve it!
Please get in touch if child-care is a barrier and we can try and help figure something out where possible. We also offer a Musical Playtime group at Hymhus on Monday mornings at 9:30am for parents, carers and babies / pre-school children -
These sessions are for parents and carers in families where children are neurodivergent, Disabled, live with health conditions or have other support needs. Parents who are themselves neurodivergent or Disabled are warmly welcomed too, whether formally diagnosed or self-identified.
We simply want to create a welcoming space for parents who may have experienced additional barriers or challenges to come together. If you're not sure how you describe your child or yourself, or are maybe on the waiting list for a diagnosis, that's totally fine - you’re in the right place! This might be a good opportunity to connect with others who are in a similar situation. The workshops are designed for parents and carers of children of all ages, including those of children who are now adults.

We'll have a theme each week to focus on. We try to choose themes that all parents will be able to relate to, like 'overload' and 'isolation'. There will be a chance to speak and explore how the themes relate to each of us and listen to other people. We won't put anybody on the spot. We'll also have very clear guidelines around confidentiality to help us all feel confident about what's happening and well looked after.
Part of the session each week will be an invitation to do a creative activity of your choice and we’ll have a range of things available. This might be doodling, writing, working with clay, playing an instrument, walking, listening to music, sketching, knitting… or you’ll be welcome to snuggle up in a chair and drink a cup of tea.
We want to reassure anyone who doesn't feel confident with creative activities; there won’t be any pressure to produce anything or show anyone else what you are doing if you don’t want to. The aim is for you to get some creative nourishment in whatever way suits you. Or simply just have a chance to connect, have some fun or even just rest for a bit!

Travel Info
Bigton is around 20 mins drive from Lerwick. Hymhus, the former Bigton Kirk is easy to find and well sign posted as you turn into Bigton and parking is very accessible.
Please get in touch and let us know if transport is an issue and we can try to help.
Bus Service from the South:
If you would like to come on the bus the #7 feeder from the South Mainland comes through Bigton at 10:36. Unfortunately, the feeder doesn’t go back through that way until 16:14 but if you took the #7 feeder at 14:00 to Channerwick there is an airport bus heading south from there at 14:21.
Bus Service from Lerwick
There is a #6 airport bus that leaves Lerwick at 10:45 and meets the feeder bus coming into the Bigton. You would arrive at 11:25 and you are most welcome to join the group a bit late.
The #7 feeder bus heading north leaves Bigton again at 14:00 and you could bring your lunch and relax at Hymhus until then. It meets the #6 bus and gets back to Lerwick at 14:42.

Creative Workshops
Our bespoke Creative Workshops are based around the Hand in Hand Parenting listening skills but also integrate IFS group work and creative arts.
The Under the Surface programme offered support and a creative outlet for parents in neuro-diverse families and was specifically designed by Alice in collaboration with Belynda Smith, a fellow Hand in Hand Instructor from Meerilinga Services in Perth, Australia. Group facilitators in Shetland were Alice, Sian Wild, Jen Hadfield, Yvonne Tait and Shona Hughson.
Email alice@warmheartedparenting.com for more info about upcoming workshops.

Individualised Support
1-2-1 consultations are available online and in-person.
Consultations are usually £55 for a one-hour session.
A 1-2-1 session can be a great starting point if you are feeling overwhelmed as a parent, don't know where to start or are curious about the Hand in Hand approach.
Sometimes parents who have completed the Foundations class use this as a way to focus on a particular emotional project or issue in their family.
Hand in Hand Parenting offer a range of self-guided courses and sometimes parents like to organise a few consultations to support them as they work through the materials.
Please get in touch if you'd like to speak about what is going to be most useful for you.
